[ mood | motivated ]

I worked on back, biceps, and cardio today. Awesome workout again with R. I'm feeling pleasure pain from yesterday, too but it's definitely worth it. Totes magotes. (Lol! I love the commercial! I'll admit I had to google that phrase though)

So I saw the scale at the gym. Uh.... I was curious but didn't have the nerve to get on it. I know it's just a number on the scale and that physical, not numerical, changes are more important-- but I dread seeing my weight. Argh! Maybe next time.

My exercise today [11 May 2010|10:18pm]

I walked my dogs today. Maybe only a quarter mile :( I need to get back into jogging, but I can't seem to get motivated. Ideally, I would love to run for 15 minutes every morning, but part of the problem is waking up.

How do you motivate yourselves?

I also enjoy yoga. :)

Hi guys, new here! I'm having a lot of trouble losing weight, despite my best efforts - if this isn't the best community for that, please point me in the right direction! Thanks. :)

So, I began my new fitness program at my gym around January 12. I see my trainer two times a week, and exercise almost every day - weight training and cardio both, usually. They also gave me a "meal plan" they want me to follow that seems to involve a very small amount of actual food, which I refuse to try because it reminds me too much of a starvation diet. I'm almost ready to give in, though.

I have eliminated all fast food and processed food from my diet, as well as soda and most sugar. I'm now eating 4-6 times a day, usually small, healthy, balanced meals and snacks.

My body fat has gone down slightly since I started, but as a whole, I can't lose weight! I completely dumbstruck and at a loss. I've been working my butt off nearly every day for over three weeks, and nothing. I've lost maybe 3 pounds by the scale and a couple inches off my tummy, but with how hard I'm working, I've been told I should have lost 10 or more pounds by now.

I'm also taking a metabolism-boosting supplement, since my metabolism has always been very slow (considering my old diet and the fact that I never exercised). I'm frustrated to the point of tears and am exhausted after working out every day.

Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong? Thanks SO much. I'm desperate.

water [01 Jan 2010|07:42pm]

sup_ability
Im new here and always looking for new friends! :)

This is an excerpt from an article. I have cross posted it, I hope that that is allowed...

[...]

Dehydration increases body fat! Every thing we eat our body tries to convert to glucose, it is the only fuel for our brain. Water contributes to energy storage along with glycogen. The more dehydrated you are, the more glucose remains in your bloodstream and will be stored as FAT. When your body is dehydrated it pulls water from the cells to hydrate the body. This includes your FAT cells. When your Fat cells are dehydrated your body will not use that fat for energy, instead it will use whatever fuel is readily available in the body.

So if you put in hours at the gym and aren't seeing much of a change it could be that your actually really dehydrated and no amount of activity will allow your body to use its excess fat for energy.

Not only that, but it is our kidneys job to filter toxins, waste, water and salt out of the blood stream and our livers duty to metabolize stored fat into energy. The liver however, CAN NOT WORK if the kidneys are not functioning properly. The liver must work harder and thus, metabolizes less fat.

It is recommended to drink 8 glasses of water a day. This is not enough water at all. We need water to function properly and if you're not peeing clearly and guzzlin the stuff throughout the day than you need to be drinking more.

Hello Ladies!

Just an article I thought I would share with  you that I thought was inspiring for working out. Enjoy!  =]

"Why is it that you can come up with every excuse in the book to avoid exercise, but once you finally do it you feel great? Wouldn’t that so-called “runner’s high” make you want to come back for more? For those who do keep coming back for more punishment, it’s because exercise really can act like a drug. What do exercise and drugs have in common? More than you might have thought, actually. Exercise triggers the release of “feel good” hormones, such as endorphins, that mimic the feel-good effects of taking drugs.

A joint study through Georgia Tech and the University of California, Irvine found that the body releases cannabinoids post-exercise. Canabiwhats, you say? Forget the pronunciation... the important thing is these compounds, which are in the same chemical family as the substances that give marijuana users a high, are what make you feel so good after exercise.

This could also explain why some people seem to become addicted to exercise. But you don’t have to be in tip-top shape to feel the effects of an exercise high. You just have to complete at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise, such as walking, swimming, running, or playing sports. Yes, the first 5-10 minutes of exercise don’t feel that great, but keep moving – you’ll feel great soon enough. Every time you exercise, you’ll feel better and better about your body and your ability to get in shape. So stick with it and soon enough exercise will be your drug of choice – and hey, it’s legal. "

Swollen lump directly under chin? [06 Oct 2009|05:44pm]
shhhquietplease
Uh, maybe this isn't the place for this, but I can't find any other active health communities that aren't psychology-centered.

What gland is it that's right under the chin, in the middle? Not off to either side of the jaw (which are lymph nodes, right?). I'm having a variety of other strange symptoms lately, so I'm a little worried about this.

Please welcome tyler to LJ! [08 Jun 2009|09:52pm]

tylertucker
Hey everyone Tyler's is new to LJ please show your support! Feel free to visit his website at tylertucker.com

Born: October 9, 2000 in Greenville, South Carolina
Treatment locations: MUSC and Baltimore, Maryland.
Total Surgeries: 37
Tyler Updates, pictures, and chatting at TYLERTUCKER.COM

Tyler's Story:
The beginning: When the family found out the horrible news…

At Christmas, just after Tyler turned two, he fell on a small toy car and scratched his jaw. The jaw swelled and by New Years Day we had to take him to the hospital. The hospital staff said that Tyler needed surgery to remove a cyst. Dr. Wilson did the surgery and came out with tears in his eyes. He said that the problem was not a cyst, but cancer and that he sent a portion of the extracted material to the lab to have it analyzed. The results came back as Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Mandible. When the results arrived, January 30, we were called to his office and he cried with us. Tyler was admitted to MUSC Hospital in Charleston, SC immediately. We felt this couldn’t be happening to our baby; not Tyler. The staff at MUSC has been wonderful and have become like family. We learned to love everyone there. Tyler has stolen the heart of everyone on Floor 7b.

Tyler was having trouble breathing because of his jaw, so the Doctor’s decided a tracheotomy was needed. At the same time, Tyler’s jaw fell so the medical staff had to wire the jaw shut. After that, he couldn’t keep feeding tubes in, forcing them to replace the tube six times.

After radiation and chemo, Tyler underwent surgery again where they took fibia bone from Tyler’s leg and transplanted it into the jaw to replace tissue that had been removed because of the cancer. Shortly thereafter, it was diagnosed that the cancer had moved to both of Tyler’s lungs. Doctors removed the upper portion of Tyler’s right lung and the chemo seemed to clear up the left lung. As a result of this surgery a chest tube was inserted. Tyler was so strong that he went walking down the hall with that chest tube still in! Dr. York said she wants a picture of Tyler to go over her desk. She said that he was the strongest kid that she had ever seen and that he was her miracle baby.

Tyler’s illness has been very hard on our family. Ashley, Tyler’s mom, is only in her twenties and is unable to hold down a job and still care for Tyler. He requires long trips to doctor’s appointments and special care. Tyler also has two young brothers that Ashley must care for. But God has been with our family and we believe he will carry us the rest of the way. Tyler had four staff infections while he was in the hospital, which encompassed most of 2003. We took a camper and stayed in it at Lake Air Campground so we could be near Tyler and Ashley through their ordeal.

Tyler has great difficulty talking because moving his jaw is very painful. He can barely eat and weighs on 57 pounds at eight years old. For a long time, Tyler had a feeding tube because he could not eat. After two unsuccessful jaw reconstruction surgeries, Tyler is now facing a titanium jaw replacement. This will be his 37th surgery over 6 years and there will be more as he grows.

Tyler loves playing with his papa George and he loves holding on to Mama and playing with her hair, but when he wants his way, he runs to Nanny, who cannot help but give him what he wants. Tyler is very close to his Nanny Darlene.

Tyler has been through things that most adults couldn’t survive..

Recently..

Tyler is now in remission. This doesn’t mean he is cured or better in anyway. How we wish the cancer the end of his ordeal, but there is so much more Tyler has to go through..

Tyler will need to be brought three hours each way to MUSC Hospital for follow up appoints all of his life. According to his doctors, he will never be 100% better. He is missing half of a lung and has had both of his legs broken to get bone for his jaw. It is devastating that he must endure more pain to take the next step and install the titanium jaw.

Tyler tends to get sick often because his body is so weak from the chemotherapy. It breaks our hearts that he cannot do the things that normal kids take for granted. Right now, Tyler is home-bound, so he is not even able to enjoy school. Without many kids in his neighborhood, Tyler gets lonely for other children.

Sadly, Tyler may never be able to eat properly. We pray that the surgery on his jaw will give him some form of normalcy. He will never have the kind of childhood many of us enjoyed and he may never be able to have children of his own some day because of the chemotherapy.

Tyler’s cancer is uncommon. We only came across five or six other children with the same cancer in our web research. Sadly, many of those children did not make it. Others had the cancer return. Tyler has beaten the odds at every turn. The doctors never believed he would make it. We feel so lucky and blessed to have Tyler still with us and we believe he will make it!!!!!!

The chance of Tyler’s cancer coming back is very high, but we believe he will beat it. It is the care and support of people from all over the world that gives us faith. We have hope, and we know Tyler is a warrior!

NEW HERE! [12 May 2009|10:03am]

benihanas
Hey everyone, I just joined as a new member to keep a fitness log hoping to inspire others with the motivation to work out as well as track my own progress. I've been actively involved in lifting and fitness for about 2 years, and I've recently poured all my acquired knowledge into a determined, driven effort to transform my body. I am also working towards my ACE certification as an entry level cert to start personal training, and will eventually work to earn my NASCM cert and possibly others. I am very knowledgeable about dieting, fitness, and workout routines, so feel free to ask me any questions as well as check out my page! I wish everyone here the best with their goals!

This is probably a common post [05 May 2009|01:08am]

Hi, I'm Mark. In the past 18 months, I managed to lose a fair amount of weight - but it was just from dieting. I want to start working out but I want opinions. I want to know what you think is the best work out. I would really like to tone up my stomach and start to develop abs, I dont want to be huge but I want to have abs. I don't know if that makes sense. I'm 6"4-6"5 and I'm 200lbs.

Googling didn't help at all. Some people praise crunches, some people hate them. It pretty much goes for every work out.
